2. GABA-Like Calming → Deeper Sleep, Brighter Dreams

The cleanest mechanistic story sits here. Ashwagandha's withanolides appear to promote sleep partly through the GABAergic system — the same inhibitory pathway that benzodiazepines, alcohol, and valerian tap into. A 2023 study in the Journal of Food and Drug Analysis (Park et al.) found that an ashwagandha root extract increased GABA content in the brain and the expression of GABA-A and GABA-B receptors, and that its sleep-promoting effect was blocked by GABA-A antagonists — concluding it acts "through the GABAergic system" as a candidate functional ingredient for sleep.

Why does that make dreams brighter? It comes down to how a memory of a dream forms. You only remember a dream if you wake up near it — or if a sliver of waking awareness pokes through during REM.
